  • Husband and wife team, farmers Mike Guebert and Linda Bangs live on 10 acres of land, raising and tending to a variety of livestock. Currently, they have 2 Jersey cows, and 40 goats that provide raw milk; about 250 laying chicken hens for eggs, and 800 chickens for (meat) broilers; and 5 turkeys: 4 hens, and one happy tom. Oh yes, and not to forget, 2 heritage breed pigs, and just the day before we arrived this spring (2012), they picked up 14 wiener pigs. This is a snapshot moment of life on their farm, and their story. I envy people who make a living this way.....I suppose the only thing it needs to be completely self sustainable is to grow some grain for pig feed?....I think this is the way Mother Nature intended us to live.....

Hi VegaChastain, I'm the filmmaker. I've done stories on other small livestock farmers and one book in particular that helped a couple get started was 'You Can Farm' by Joel Salatin. They also went to apprentice at his farm years ago [with kids in tow!]. I'm not sure this would be a fit for you, but I know many farm interns go on to start their own farm. Start small is another piece of advice I hear from many. Hope this helps a little.

My one dream for when I'm in my middle age is to have a small farm, i reckon it's a natural thing to be a farmer, a part of human nature.

Noble !!!!! Some advice; Don't make pets out of your livestock, and cool your milk immediately after milking. It will sweeten your milk.... Good luck..... Jim...

Awesome story friend! Thanks for the presentation, I enjoyed hearing how your farm progressed.. I came here to get the feel, your video gave me some insight as to what I'm in store for as I just bought a 12 acre property that I'm going to build my custom farm upon. I am a big Lord of the Rings nerd, and found some hobbit hole chicken coops here on youtube that I'm super excited to order to start my chickens out in! They look neat landscaped... Anyhow your animals & farm are beautiful! Nice job!

I just love how these animals all get along and seem so peaceful. They don't want to hurt anyone, they just want to live and offer you the chance as well! It also seems like you really care for them a lot, I thank you for that!
